The Hornets will be a tough act to follow. We're replacing a championship winning team with a group of guys that might not be playing in the NHL if it weren't for expansion.

• The Hornets were a minor league affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings from 1936 to 1945.

1961 Alternate Pittsburgh Hornets Jersey
To celebrate the rebirth of the team, Hornets' owner John Harris wanted to have a unique jersey for the road. The result was a blue wool jersey trimmed in gold.

It didn't last more than two months.

The problem was obvious when the Hornets played their first televised road game against the Buffalo Bisons on October 15, 1961. (Photo from Bison's game courtesy of Buffalo State College Library)

The problem was how the blue color translated on black-and- white television. Home teams wore darker colors in those days and, unfortunately, the blue jerseys looked like dark jerseys too. Rare televison coverage was too confusing for viewers who couldn't see any contrast between the teams on the tube.

The jerseys featured tie-down collars. A full circular crest trimmed in gold.

Eventually the team wore white jerseys with red trim on the road.
