It's a big honor to play for my hometown team, but it's even more special to wear my dad's number.

Bob Johnson played 12 games
with Pittsburgh in 1974-75
|
When the Penguins skated into Philadelphia to face the Flyers on Nov. 21, 1996, it was a little more than just the latest chapter in the bitter rivalry between the teams. It was the first game in a Pittsburgh uniform for forward Alex Hicks, making he and Wayne Hicks who played 15 games with the Penguins in their first season the first father and son to play for the Penguins.
It had taken more than 29 seasons, and a trade two days earlier that sent Dmitri Mironov and Shawn Antoski to Anaheim for Alex Hicks and Fredrick Olausson, for that to happen. But Alex and Wayne Hicks would soon have some company.
Eric Meloche, son of former Penguins’ goaltender and current goaltending coach Gilles Meloche, made his Pittsburgh debut on Jan. 15, 2002 at Vancouver; and Ryan Malone, son of former Penguins’ center Greg Malone, wore his dad’s familiar No. 12 when he made his NHL debut with Pittsburgh on Oct. 10, 2003 against Los Angeles also becoming the first Pittsburgh native to play for the team.
On October 7, 2009, an appearance by goaltender Brent Johnson, signed as a free agent this summer, puts he and father Bob on the list. Bob Johnson played 12 games for Pittsburgh during the 1974-75 season.
Bob Johnson's last game with the Penguins (and his final NHL game) was on April 6, 1975 against the Washington Capitals. Johnson was tagged for eight goals from the Caps in the 8-4 loss, including a third period hat trick from future Penguins forward Stan Gilbertson.
Brent Johnson is the grandson of Hall of Famer Sid Abel who played for the Detroit Red Wings and the Chicago Blackhawks for over 14 seasons. Abel played his minor league hockey in Pittsburgh with the Hornets in 1938-39.
Johnson wears No. 12 on his mask with the initials "SA" to honor his grandfather. |
