Pittsburgh Penguins Mascots
Penguins' mascot "Penguin Pete" is paraded on the ice at the Civic Arena in Pittsburgh during an intermission of a game between the Penguins and the Buffalo Sabres on October 10, 1971. Buffalo won the game, 2-1.
"Penguin Pete" the Penguins’ first mascot - an Ecuadorian-born bird on loan from the Pittsburgh Zoo - made his first appearance during the second intermission of a game against the Boston Bruins on October 19, 1968.
Pete died of pneumonia one month into the season, it is believed, because the ice crew at the arena kept his nesting area too warm.
A second penguin mascot was loaned to the team and made it through the 1971-72 season.
The Penguins’ current mascot, Iceburgh (right), debuted in 1993-94. Iceburgh was known as "Icey" in the 1995 film Sudden Death filmed at the Civic Arena.
