For once, we control our own destiny. The impact that Lemieux is going to have on our franchise is something we need. It won't just be the Pittsburgh Penguins; it will be Mario Lemieux and the Pittsburgh Penguins.

ED JOHNSTON
General Manager of the Penguins in 1984

This is huge for the franchise to be able to get a player of his caliber.

MARIO LEMIEUX
Player and owner of the Penguins after the Penguins won the draft lottery to select Sidney Crosby in 2005

Legend has it that then-general manager Baz Bastien, on October 18, 1978, sent a first-round draft pick to the Montreal Canadiens believing that the player he acquired – Rod Schutt – actually was future Hall of FamerSteve Shutt.

Rod Schutt insists it’s a fable.

“That was actually a locker-room joke,” Schutt said. “Guys would say, '(Bastien) only has one eye, so he only saw the last name.’ It wasn’t true, because he knew quite well who he was getting. Pittsburgh was going to draft me originally, and we had conversations before the draft.”

Schutt laughed and added, “Every once in a while, he did used to call me Steve.”

• Pittsburgh selected a Lemieux in 1970. Ron Lemieux, no relation to Mario, was selected in the ninth round.

• The Penguins had the first overall selection in the draft on three occasions:

1984 - Lemieux
2003 - Fleury
2005 - Crosby

• In 1974, The Penguins drafted Bill "Buzz" Schneider (1980 US Olympic Gold Medal Team), but he never played a game for the Pens.
